The Plan

I decided to use one of my winter coats as sort of a template for Nell.

Nell

The width of the knitted piece seems pretty good, so I think I’ll be OK. It might be a little oversized at the bust and shoulders, but that’s not a problem since I didn’t really want it to be snug. My row gauge is off, though, since I’m using smaller needles. That means I can’t follow the pattern shaping (which is only given by number of rows), so I’ll have to figure out all of my own (hence the coat trick).

I can’t even calculate what the shaping would be in the original pattern in inches, because I don’t know what the true row gauge is supposed to be (the gauge is only given in stockinette). It sure would be nice if there were more detailed dimensions on the schematic. Not to mention a gauge in the pattern stitch. I don’t mind doing the math myself, but I can’t even do that without enough information.

At least it doesn’t look ginormous.

Crazy patterns. Only expert knitters need apply. It does look good so far and I’ll bet it comes out beautifully.

  2. The cables look really crisp and clean.

It’s going to be very pretty. I read once (Anne Hanson’s maybe?) that designers give the stockinette gauge because in theory if you can match that, you’d match their pattern gauge as well. I don’t know how true that is, or how true for row gauge vs stitch gauge, but there you go.

It’s going to be lovely on you and I have faith you’ll rock that pattern.

That’s that British ethic for you: “You’re on your own.”

    “And don’t complain.”

Oh, and, “What’s wrong with you that you NEED all that information?”

This is from a staunch Britophile. But still. 😀

Wow, those cables really stand out on that yarn. I have absolute faith it’ll end up perfect.

Great idea to use the coat – and I agree – the cables look fantastic so far!
